RVGL not working

Hi,

MY RVGL is not working proberly. WHen I installed the game + did what Huki told me to do import the savegame, the game didn't start.

april 15th, I contacted Huki and explained the problem. The game didn't start at all.

april 16th, I tried to launch the game, no troubles at all.

april 17th, I wanted to start the game via RVH, not working. When trying to launch it directly, it didn't work either.

today april 18th, the game did start after I directly launched it.

Can you post a log after it crashes like this? The log in your first post is from a successful run.

Earlier you PM'ed me an actual crash log, and that stopped just before it printed the video info. This means RVGL was unable to even initialize a window. It points to some misconfiguration of your hardware or drivers.

I should probably add more helpful error messages in this place, so we can pinpoint what's going wrong. For now I'm just curious if you recently upgraded any hardware or reinstalled graphics drivers?

I didn't update any driver lately. Or it has to do with the windows updates...

Sounds like a scheduled task or a service or an update or a specific background program that interferes with the process, try "verifying" your system before running rvgl?
try disabling windows updates.

Huki: would you be able to find the issue if you read the minidump generated by WerFault?

It's getting weirder and weirder...

Today I tried to run the game around 13:00. It worked fine. RV was the first program to open when I started the PC at that time.

Now at 19:15, I just tried again, but nothing happens... Programs I opened in the time between:

- Skype
- Steam
- Team Fortress 2
- Google Chrome
- RV House
- Windows Media Player
- Cool Edit Pro

I tried restarting the PC but after that it still didn't launch....

URV told me to restart my pc and only open RVH. I did, and it worked fine after that.... wierd stuff going on

Quick reply: it seems RVGL is unable to initialize the graphics sub-system. This can happen either if the graphics card drivers are buggy or corrupt, or if some other program running in the background has gained exclusive access to your card and won't budge.

Try closing all 3rd party programs and services and then launch rvgl again.
Also try running other OpenGL programs and see if they work.

Older SDL2 doesn't work either

To confirm that the crash is due to SDL, I have built a simple test program, which 1) initializes SDL, 2) creates an opengl capable window, 3) renders a blank frame. Upon running it should generate a log file. Can you try it and post the log?

Interesting. When the test build is working, try running rvgl immediately afterwards. For some users the crash is solved simply by restarting the PC. I'd like to confirm that rvgl continues to crash after the test build ran fine.

I've removed parts of the rvgl code that isn't strictly needed for the window initialization. It should be closer to the test app. Try this: rvgl_test.7z

Great, that helps narrow down the source of the crash. I've fixed a potential issue with the display modes enumeration. Try this build:
rvgl_disp_mode_fix.7z
It should prompt you with a dialog showing the number of display modes on your system. Let me know that number (and of course, whether this build crashes or not).

It says '334 display modes found' then black screen (but you can hear the menu music playing) so I had to Alt+F4. I probably should have mentioned this earlier but I'm currently using a monitor with a VGA cable so not all resolutions listed in Windows are proper.


My actual monitor resolution is 1280x1024@60Hz.

RVGL attempts to take the desktop resolution by default. It's possible that rvgl's configuration file has an improper resolution selected. You can try deleting profiles\rvgl.ini from your re-volt folder and let it re-generate. If that doesn't work, I'm afraid you'll have to edit the rvgl.ini manually, and set:

Code: Select all

ScreenWidth = 1280
ScreenHeight = 1024
ScreenBpp = 32
ScreenHz = 60
But the default resolution should work usually.

And here's a build without the display modes prompt at startup: rvgl_fix.7z
If everything goes well, I'll integrate the fixes in the next release.

I ran rvgl_fix after deleting profiles\rvgl.ini and it works fine now. It opens in fullscreen with the correct video resolution/mode.
